Overview

Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide encoded by the KiSS-1 gene, originally discovered as a metastasis suppressor (hence the name "metastin"). It plays a master regulatory role in reproductive endocrinology by stimulating gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons in the hypothalamus, which triggers the entire downstream hormonal cascade (LH, FSH, testosterone, estrogen).

Research led by Professor Waljit Dhillo at Imperial College London has demonstrated that kisspeptin-54 can stimulate reproductive hormone release in both men and women, with potential applications in IVF, hypogonadism, and functional hypothalamic amenorrhea. It also enhances sexual and emotional brain processing, improving attraction and bonding responses.
