Overview

LL-37 is a 37-amino acid peptide and the only member of the cathelicidin family found in humans. It is cleaved from its precursor protein hCAP-18 and is expressed in immune cells (neutrophils, macrophages), epithelial cells, and other barrier tissues. It serves as a critical component of the innate immune system.

LL-37 has direct antimicrobial activity against a broad spectrum of pathogens including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, enveloped viruses, and fungi. Beyond direct killing, it modulates immune responses by promoting chemotaxis, stimulating angiogenesis, neutralizing endotoxins (LPS), and influencing adaptive immunity. It has been studied for wound healing, infection prevention, and as an adjunct in biofilm-associated infections.
