Overview
MOTS-c is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome, specifically within the 12S rRNA gene. Discovered by Dr. Changhan David Lee at USC in 2015, it is one of the first mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs) shown to have significant systemic metabolic effects.
MOTS-c acts as an exercise mimetic by activating AMPK, improving glucose uptake and metabolism independently of insulin. It has been shown to prevent age-dependent and high-fat-diet-induced insulin resistance in mice. Levels of MOTS-c decline with age, correlating with metabolic deterioration, making it a compelling target for metabolic and anti-aging interventions.
