Overview
SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂) that selectively targets and concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Developed by Dr. Hazel Szeto and Dr. Peter Bhatt at Cornell, it binds to cardiolipin, a phospholipid essential for mitochondrial electron transport chain function.
By stabilizing cardiolipin interactions with cytochrome c, SS-31 optimizes electron transport, reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and restores ATP synthesis. It has been studied in clinical trials for Barth syndrome, heart failure, age-related macular degeneration, and primary mitochondrial myopathy. It represents one of the most advanced mitochondria-targeted therapeutics in development.
